| Charrette Call for Contributions | Exploring Inclusive Practices in Architectural Education

Guest Editors: Marisela Mendoza and Ana Souto (Nottingham Trent University)

Charrette, the journal of the association of architectural educators (aae), first published in 2013, is now well established as a pioneering research journal for academics, practitioners, and theorists engaged in design teaching practices and theoretical debates. For this issue (Volume 11, Issue 2), Charrette is excited to announce a special issue exploring inclusive practices.

Theme:

Exploring Inclusive Practices in Architectural Education

This edition of Charette will ask its contributors and readers to reflect on current pedagogical approaches in architectural education: how inclusive are they? How much are we contributing to equity, diversity and inclusion strategies in Higher Education? Is our current curricula responding to tackling the awarding gap? Does it promote equity and justice regarding gender, race and disability?  How can inclusive practices embedded in architectural education influence the profession?

This special issue aims to facilitate a platform to reflect on the above issues, recognise an inclusive community of practice, to inspire each other, and to share and disseminate good practice across institutions to support architectural educators.

We hope papers submitting to this call will come from a broad range of contextual backgrounds, cover a broad spectrum of topics, and look ahead to futures of inclusive architectural pedagogies. We welcome contributions from students, academics, and practitioners.

Submission Formats:

In their expression of interest, authors should clearly indicate which of the following formats they are submitting under and whether the submission will be in written and/or graphic form. Authors who feel their contribution might not fit one of these categories are encouraged to reach out to the guest editors for advice.

  • Projects / Personal Narratives – 3,000-5,000 words (including all references and endnotes) – substitute traditional “academic” data with descriptive and reflective content related to personal, educational experiences and/or projects. Narratives may include more images, diagrams, and illustrations.
